Club Development

There are 26 speed skating clubs in Ontario that provide members of the Association with opportunity to learn to speed skating as well as practice and race under the guidance of qualified volunteer coaches.

Every club faces the challenges of recruiting new skaters each season and teaching them how to skate and at the same providing experienced skaters with the practice time and coaching necessary to develop those skills.

Ontario clubs are run by volunteers who form a Board of Directors who are responsible for the collection of membership dues and management of club activities.  The fees paid by members to local clubs covers the cost of ice time and club safety equipment like mats as well as the dues paid the Ontario Speed Skating Association and Speed Skating Canada.  The provincial and national associations  are responsible for providing members with a racing program for skaters at all levels of skill and interest as well programs design to develop both coaches and officials.  Together the two Associations also provide members and clubs with liability insurance and accident insurance.

The Club and Membership Development Committee, headed by our Vice President of Development is responsible for managing this area of Ontario Speed Skating.

Are you interested in starting a new speed skating club?  Once local volunteers have started the process of forming a new club you are urged to contact the OSSA Office to obtain information on the basic ‘Steps to Starting a Speed Skating Club in Ontario’ and for additional assistance.

Speed Skating Clubs in Ontario are able to build their clubs with financial assistance from both the Ontario Trillium Foundation and using Speed Skating Canada Grants.  Members of the Club and Membership Development Committee can assist with the application process.
